"Outstanding Small Chapter Award"  for 2001 awarded to IEEE-PES Madras Chapter (India)
 
This prestigious Award is an International recognition for the IEEE-PES Madras Chapter. "Small Chapter" indicates membership less than 100. We are
the only club to be selected for this award among all the small chapters world-wide. The award includes a cash award of $1000, framed certificate/plaque,  and certificates for the winning chapter officers in recognition of their outstanding leadership. The Outstanding Chapter  Award (OCA)  was presented by the IEEE-PES International President, Er. John Estey, at the Awards Banquet ofIEEE-PES Summer Power Meeting at Chicago on July 23, 2002, to the Chapter Chair, Er. P. Suresh Chander Pal. 
  
Er. P. Suresh Chander Pal also received the "Outstanding Chapter Chairman" plaque, in recognition for his leadership and for providing the best set of technical, societal and membership-advancement programs and activities in the Chapter, during the year 2001. He also received the OCA Banner and the Officer Certificates at the PES Membership/Chapters Luncheon on July 24, 2002.

Profile of  Chapter Chair

Er.G.V.Rao, Senior Member, IEEE- PES  has held responsible  positions  in G.E.C of India Ltd, started  his own business in 1983, and is currently the Chairman/Managing Director of Rowsons Transformers Pvt Ltd, marketing all types of Transformers, Unitised Sub-stations etc.He has published a manual on Transformers, in the form of Question and Answers, and booklets on Capacitors, Resin Cast  Transformers,Voltage Controllers etc.. He has  conducted Technical seminars on Power & Distribution  Transformers, Industrial Servo Voltage Controllers, Mobile Sub-stations, Fire Prevention Systems for Power & Distribution Transformers, Capacitors, Resin Cast Dry Type Maintenance Free Transformers, Unitised Package Sub-stations, Ventilation  systems etc.  He has produced  his own video cassette & CD-ROM for Unitised Package Sub-station arrangements.  Er. Rao's entrepreneurial spirit and appeal continue to proliferate as he has over 53 years' professional experience.  We are proud of his accomplishments, in his profession and in our society.

List of Contributions to IEEE:  Er.G.V.Rao was PES Madras Chapter's Treasurer in 1999 & 2000 and Chapter Vice Chairman-II  in 2001.  He has given six Technical presentations at the local PES workshops and seminars and presided over the PES meetings  when the Chapter Chairman was away in U.S.
during January and February 2001.

Awards: He was awarded IEEE PES  Outstanding  Chapter Award in a grand manner at Hotel Savera, Madras.

Profile of  Immediate Chapter Chair

Er. P. Suresh Chander Pal  received the B.E. (Electrical) degree from Madras University in 1958. He worked in Tamil Nadu Electricity Boardfor 37 years in
Operation, Maintenance & Construction Wings-besides in Distribution & Thermal Power Stations, and retired as Board Member (Distribution) in 1995.
Mr. Pal, who is a Chartered Engineer (India), is currently practicing as Advisor & Consultant.
He was a delegate to the International Power Seminars at Manila (Philippines) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). He attended the International Lions Convention 
at Montreal, Canada & the 2000 IEEE - PES Chapters Congress at Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. He has served in several councils and committees outside
of the IEEE, in Institution of Engineers (India), Indian Institute of Public Administration, YMCA, Y's Men's Club, Don Bosco School P.T.A., and International
Association of Lions Clubs. He was
recognized for his special mission to Sri Lanka by Government of India, for electrical revamping works, during the LTTE hostilities in 1987-88 and for his yeoman service for ensuring coal-supplies from various collieries in North India thro' sea, rail and road transport to Thermal Power Stations, in Tamil Nadu. He is a recipient of several awards for his humanitarian services through Lionism. He is a Life Fellow of the Institution of Valuers, Life Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India), and Life Fellow of the Institution of Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering (IETE). He is also a life member of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA). He was honored with IEEE Third Millennium Medal by 2000 IEEE President for his outstanding contribution in his area of activity. He is the recipient of Outstanding Small Chapter Award 2001 from the PES International President, Mr.John Estey, on July 23, 2002 and the Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award for 2002 in PES Madras Chapter. The COEA was presented to him, at an impressive function on Feb.22, 2003 at Tag
Center,Madras.

We are working with commitment to achieve our goals and our mission. We have organized several technical lectures and societal  
meetings. In addition, our focus will be on membership advancement and membership development.

Activities for Calendar Year 2002

1.  Technical / Societal Seminar (Jan. 5, 2002)

One day Seminar was conducted at Hotel Salem Castle, at Salem, located about 315 km from Madras, on January 5, 2002. Seminar topics included Industrial Servo Voltatge Controllers, recent developments in new types of transformers, Energy Audit (with computer demonstrations) and Unitised Package Substation.

The seminar included several paper presentations & panel sessions, which attracted 320 attendees including students & faculty members from Thiagarajan Polytechnic, Sona College of Engineering, Government Engineering College, Mahindra  Engineering College, Paavai Women's Polytechnic, CSI Polytechnic and Engineers from Public Works Department, Salem Steel Plant, PWD Staff Training Institute, Insurance Surveyors, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Electrical Contractors and Industrialists. The deliberations were useful & profitable to the Academia and others in the Business &Industry.It helped them to gain a new look on updated technologies. The Seminar was a great success. 

  • Er.P.S.Jagdish, Executive Director, M/s Indo-Tech Transformers Pvt. Ltd., Madras, spoke on the recent developments and the new types of Transformers including Mobile Transformers, mounted on Trailers, for use in mobile Sub-Stations. 

  • Er.Hemant Kumar Sai, Product Manager of M/s Rowsons Transformers Pvt. Ltd., Madras, discussed the design & applications of the Industrial Servo Voltage Controllers(30 to 2000KVA), and compared to the conventional OnLoad Tap Changers. Er.G.V.Rao,Chairman & Managing Director,
    M/s RowsonsTransformers Pvt. Ltd., also spoke on the special features of the ISV Controllers. 

  • Er.Millind Chittawar, Managing Director of M/s SeeTechSolutions Pvt. Ltd., Nagpur, presented a paper on Energy Savings Audit including a computer-based demonstration. He explained various practical applications to ensure high efficiency and reduced billing in Domestic, Commercial,  Business &  Industrial establishments. 

  • The Paper presented by Er.V.Venugopal, General Manager ,M/s Rowsons Transformers, Madras, on Unitised Package Sub-Station was highly useful, as it covered wide applications with Cast Resin Dry Type Maintenance free Transformers with Dyna grid principle for aggressive atmosphere
    and overloading tolerance.

2.  Technical Symposium  (Feb 26, 2002)
Er.P.Suresh Chander Pal presided over the SURGE FO-2002, an Intra Technical Symposium of the Electrical and Electronic Association of the IFET College of Engineering at Villupuram, located about 192 km from Madras, on  February 26th 2002 and motivated the students for starting  the
Student Chapter.About 150 Students participated.

 

3.  Ceremony for Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award for 2001  (March 9, 2002)
A gala function was arranged at the elegant Savera Hotel, Madras, on March 9, 2002, to honour Er.G.V.Rao, IEEE-PES Madras Chapter Vice-Chair & Treasurer, with the Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award for 2001, received from our International Headquarters. Felicitations were offered & the Award was presented to Er.G.V.Rao by Mr.T.T.Vasu, Director, T.T.K.Group of Companies, eminent public figure & Industrialist. Er. P.Suresh Chander Pal, Chapter Chairman, Dr.M.Ponnavaikko, Director, Tamil Virtual University, Er.S.A.Soundararajan, Section Chairman, Er.C.R.Sasi, India Council Vice-Chairman/Membership, Er.H.Kalyanasundaram, IEEE India Ombudsman, and other well-wishers, commended Er.Rao's contributions, as a highly successful, practical & practising Electrical & Electronics Engineer, and as an actor in T.V & films, religious philanthropist & a role-model. Over 300 people including eminent IndustrialConsultants, Electrical Contractors, Students and Professional managers, attended the function.The OCE Award was in recognition of Er.Rao's 53 years of professional service and in appreciation of his initiatives and efforts for the organizational growth & improvement of IEEE-PES Madras Chapter.

4.  IEEE-PES Madras Chapter wins the Outstanding Chapter Award for 2001  (July 21-25, 2002)
IEEE-PES Madras Chapter has been nominated for its performance during the Calendar year 2001, under the leadership of Chapter Chair, Er.P.Suresh Chander Pal. The Outstanding Chapter Award (framed Certificate/Plaque) was presented to him, by the International PES President, Er,John Estey, at the Awards Banquet on July 23, 2002 and the OCA Banner & the Officer Certificates at the PES Membership/Chapters Luncheon on July 24, 2002. The award ceremony was held in conjunction with IEEE-PES Summer Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., from July 21st to 25th, 2002 .The commendation is for the Chapter's continued excellence, in providing technical & professional programs, services to its membership, & educational development of students, members and Engineers in general.

5.  Technical Seminar (Sept. 17, 2002)
A  Technical Seminar, was arranged on  September 17th 2002, at Central Public Works Department (Govt. of India) Regional Training Institute, Southern Region
wing, third floor, Rajaji Bhavan, Besant Nagar, Madras.  Lectures were given by our PES Madras Chapter members, on Transformers, Unitised Package
Sub-Stations,  Mobile Sub-Stations, HT Vacuum Circuit Breakers, Industrial Servo Voltage Controllers etc., along with Video and Audio presentations.
  • Er.R.Babu, presented a paper on Unitised Package sub-station, Resin Cast Dry type Maintenance Free Transformer and also on HT  Switchgears 
  • Er. Upendra Das, presented a paper on Oil Cooled Transformers and also on Mobile Sub-Station Transformers 
       
  • Er. K.Hemanth Kumar Sai, presented a paper on Industrial Servo Voltage controllers on HT and LT Systems. The total number of participants was
    twenty five, comprising  of  Engineers  from the Quality Control and  E & M.of the Central Public Works Department, Madras.

6.  Technical Meeting  (Sept. 22, 2002)

A Technical Meeting was held on "KNOW YOUR SYSTEM SPECIALITIES" with the topic: "Efficient working of Electrical   installations". The  Guest  Speaker   was 
Er. S.Subramaniam, Chief Electrical Inspector to the Government of  Tamil Nadu.The meeting was attended by 52 people, comprising  PES Members, Industrialists , Electrical Contractors and Consultants etc.

7.  Distinguished Lecturer Program - Tutorial - (Oct. 7, 2002)

PES Madras Chapter organized a one-day tutorial on "VSC Based FACTS - Controllers: Modeling & Applications" by Dr. Kalyan K. Sen, under Distinguished Lecture Program, at the MSB Seminar Room, Electrical Engg. Dept., Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Dr. Sen is from Westinghouse Electro-Mechanical Division Technology Center in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Er. P. Suresh Chander Pal, Chairman, IEEE-PES Madras Chapter, spoke on Chapter activities, invited participants to become IEEE-PES Members and highlighted the relevance of the topic. Prof. C. Venkataseshiah, Head, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT, Madras, welcomed the Distinguished Speaker and the introduction was done by Dr. K.S. Swarup, Assistant Professor. 

The program was divided into 4 sessions with a tea-break between the first and second session and also between third and fourth session. At the end of the second session, lunch was provided to the participants. Sessions 1 and 2 covered the basics of power flow control. In Sessions 3 & 4, Dr. Sen explained the working of STATCOM and UPFC in detail, clearly explaining the advantages and limitations of these components. He also explained the development of the patented 'Sen Transformer', which utilizes the phase angle regulators based magnetics in an innovative way for power flow control. Dr. Sen spoke on the state-of-the-art technology of FACTS controllers which are gaining more popularity and are being used, around the world, to control power flow in high voltage transmission lines. 

This seminar gave an exposure of real-life implementation and knowledge and showed the trends in the power system planning, operation and control. The hands-on design experience of Dr. Sen was thoroughly visible in his lecture and the way he handled the whole lecture with lot of interaction from the student participants as well as from faculty members. The participationwas overwhelming as more than 72 people took part in this seminar including faculty members and students of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, top-level scientists from Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore, faculty members from some private engineering colleges and also design engineers from Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board and a few other industrial houses and power utilities. The Tutorial generated enthusiasm among the participants, which was evident from the involved discussions that followed Dr. Sen's presentation.

After the participants left, Dr. Sen had a separate session for discussions with Research Scholars (MS & Ph.D.) of the Electricial Engg. Dept., as well as with Post-graduate and Under-graduate students describing the new area of research in Power systems and other related areas.

8.  Region 10 PES Chapters Meeting - Yokohama, Japan  (Oct. 10-12, 2002)
Er. P. Suresh Chander Pal, Chairman, attended the Region 10 Chapter Chairs meeting at Yokohama in Japan on Oct.10-12, 2002, at the invitation of PES Region Director, Dr. Danny Sutanto.We had very useful interactions and exchange of information, besides views and suggestions for the growth and development of PES Chapters.

9.  Factory Visit : M/S Indo Tech Transformers Limited  (Dec. 5, 2002)
M/s. Indo Tech Transformers Limited,  one of the leading manufacturers of high voltage transformers in South India, has a state-of-the-art factory (established  in 1995)
at SIDCO Industrial Estate,Thirumazhisai on the outskirts of Chennai. The factory has a manufacturing capacity is upto 100 MVA, 220 KV Class. Mr. G. V. Rao,
Vice Chairman, IEEE Madras Chapter, along with a team of members visited the factory on Dec. 5, 2002. The members saw the manufacturing facilities and
discussed with company officials about the manufacturing process, testing and other related activities. For a detailed report

Dr. Ponnavaikko was nominated for this award in recognition of the outstanding technical and leadership 
contributions to IEEE, Power Engineering profession and Education. The award was presented on 
Feb.10, 2001 to Dr.Ponnavaikko at an impressive function.

  • IEEE-PES Chapter at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, will be re-activated with Dr. Shanti Swarup, Assistant Professor, 
    as the Faculty Advisor and a fresh batch of elected Student Principal Officers and necessary support by the IEEE-PES Madras
    Chapter. Efforts are being made to form Affinity group with the GOLD members.
  • PES Student chapter was formed to meet the technical needs of 36 student-members of Velammal Engineering College, Velammal Nagar, Ambattur-Red Hills Road, Chennai - 600 066. Mrs.Sheila Haran, Professor Head of the Department of EEE is the Faculty Advisor/Branch Counseler. The Chapter Officers are: M. Sundararajan (Chairman), B. Anandhi (Vice-Chairman), P.R. Mahesh Narayanan (Secretary), N. Easwaran (Treasurer)

  • Efforts are being taken to form student chapter at SRM Engineering College, Kattankulathur (near Chennai). Prof. Muthu Subramaniam, Head of the Department of EEE will be the Faculty Advisor.

  • Efforts  have been taken to start IEEE-PES  Student Chapter  at IFET College of Engineering at Villupuram with Mr.Kodi, Vice Principal & Head of Department of EEE, as the Faculty advisor
  • The IEEE Student Branch was launched at RMD Engineering College at Kavaraipettai 30kms away from Madras and Er. P.Suresh Chander Pal motivated the students and the management to start the PES Student Chapter from this year. The students of RMK Engineering College also will be starting the PES Student Chapter shortly. Er. Ramakrishnan will be the Faculty Adviser.
