Alternative Generations:

"Opportunities and Challenges"

Environmental concerns and escalating oil prices are attracting public attention on an unprecedented scale on how we utilize our scarce energy resources. Many are beginning to realize the untold damages that our life styles are causing to the mother earth. These concerns have heightened the search for alternative energy sources especially the renewable such as solar, wind and tidal. In addition, scientists are looking for more efficient and cleaner ways of making full use of our remaining carbon resources. Sustainability is the key objective and this involves new energy sources as well as more efficient utilization.

The Chapter is honoured to have two distinguished speakers to speak to us on how their companies are making a difference to the above situation.

Talk 1: Solar energy

Speaker: Mr. Christophe Inglin, Managing Director of Phoenix Solar Pte Ltd

Abstract:

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is certainly clean and sustainable. But it is still an insignificant source of energy, relative to global consumption. What will it take before PV can make a measurable difference? What other technical developments do we need besides cheaper PV modules? Within the next 10-20 years we could see over 5% of Singapore's electricity sourced from the sun. The PV sector will become a significant source of jobs, both locally and regionally. Will such developments prove disruptive or complementary to the established power generation industry?

Talk 2: Overview of Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems

Speaker: Stephen Green, Business Development Director, Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems

Abstract:

Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems Limited (RRFCS) is developing solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems for megawatt scale, stationary power generation applications. The systems will be based on its’ patented, low-cost SOFC technology in combination with specialist turbomachinery resulting in an SOFC ‘hybrid’. The SOFC hybrid power generation system will be clean, quiet, compact, highly fuel efficient and most importantly, cost competitive.
