Current Switchgear Subcommittee Activities:

C37.20.1 (LV metal-enclosed switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse (for revision project)

No present activity.  Reaffirmation submitted to RevCom for Sept 2007 action.  Following reaffirmation, a working group for revision of C37.20.1 to incorporate the content of amendments 1 and 2, and to consider other desirable revisions, is expected to begin.  A task force reviewed low-voltage dc traction power switchgear (3200Vdc and below), and determined that a separate standard for this class of equipment is needed (C37.20.8 designation reserved).

C37.20.1a Amendment 1 working group (LV metal-enclosed switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse

This document was approved by the IEEE-SA 9-2005, and by ANSI 12-2005.  This working group has been disbanded.

C37.20.1b Amendment 2 working group (LV metal-enclosed switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse

This document was approved by the IEEE-SA 12-2006 and by ANSI 04-2007.  This working group has been disbanded.

C37.20.2 working group (MV metal-clad switchgear)

Chair: M. Wactor

The working group for revision of the 1999 document began work in 05-2006.  The revisions will include reorganization to coordinate with C37.100.1-2007 (Common Clauses for Power Switchgear).  This will allow elimination of large portions of text for common subjects (e.g. procedures for continuous current tests) from the metal-clad switchgear document, simplifying future maintenance.

C37.20.3 / C37.20.4 / C37.22 (MV load interrupter switchgear and switches)

Chair:  C. Ball

These three documents are related, with C37.20.3 covering metal-enclosed load interrupter switchgear, C37.20.4 covering the switch used in C37.20.3 switchgear, and C37.22 listing the preferred ratings of the C37.20.4 switches.  The working groups for revision of these documents began work 05-2007.  The revisions will include reorganization to coordinate with C37.100.1-2007 (Common Clauses for Power Switchgear) and with changes in IEEE 1247-2005 (Interrupter Switches for Alternating Current, Rated Above 1000 Volts).  As part of the revision effort, the content of C37.22 will be merged into C37.20.4.

C37.20.6 working group (MV ground & test devices)

Chair: T. A. Burse

The PAR for this project was approved by IEEE-SA 12-2005, to revise the original 1997 standard to reflect lessons learned in nearly 10 years use of the standard.  The working group has reviewed several drafts, and the ballot for D1.0 will close 08-18-2007.  The document is being expanded to cover more types of devices, and to include electrically operated devices that may have interrupting capacity.

C37.20.7 working group (arc resistant LV and MV switchgear)

Chair: M. Wactor

The PAR for this project was approved by IEEE-SA in 11-2004, to incorporate lessons learned from application of the original 2001 document for internal arcing tests.  The scope of the standard has also been extended in this project to cover LV switchgear, not covered in the 2001 document.  After successful ballot, the document was provisionally approved by RevCom in 06-2006, subject to resolution of several issues.  Resolution of these issues took longer than expected, and RevCom withdrew the conditional approval 12-2006.  A final recirculation ballot for the D14 document closed 06-28-2007 and was successful.  The document has been submitted to RevCom for consideration at the Sept 2007 Standards Board meetings.

C37.20.8 working group (LV dc traction switchgear)

Chair: C. Ross

LV dc traction switchgear has been covered in C37.20.1 for many years, but a task force determined that LV dc traction switchgear should be moved to a separate document.  The working group is being formed now and the first meeting should be held in the fall of 2007.  In coordination with this activity, the Low Voltage Switchgear Devices subcommittee is initiating revision of C37.14 (Low Voltage DC circuit breakers) and may separate LV dc traction circuit breakers into a different standard.

C37.21 (control switchboards)

No current activity.  This document was approved by the IEEE-SA in 6-2005, and by ANSI in 10-2005.  It is expected that reaffirmation will occur in 2010, with a revision effort starting sometime after 2010.

C37.23 (metal-enclosed bus)

No current activity.  This document was substantially revised in the 2003 edition.  It is expected that reaffirmation will occur in 2008, with a revision effort starting sometime after 2008.

C37.24 (solar radiation on outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear)

No current activity.  This document was revised in the 2003 edition to reflect modern data on solar radiation.  It is expected that reaffirmation will occur in 2008, and that revision efforts will not occur until after 2008.

C37.59 working group (conversions of power switchgear)

Chair: P. Dwyer

This standard is sponsored by ADSCOM, with joint participation by the Switchgear Assemblies, Low Voltage Switchgear Devices, and High Voltage Circuit Breakers subcommittees.  The PAR for the project was approved in 09-2004, and the first IEEE-SA ballot closed in 04-2007.  A recirculation ballot for D11 will close 08-08-2007.  Switchgear Assemblies subcommittee members very actively participate in this effort.

C37.81 (seismic qualification of class 1E switchgear)

This document describes methods by which metal-enclosed power switchgear can be qualified seismically, for use in nuclear power stations.  It is also useful for qualification of switchgear for applications other than in nuclear power stations.  The document is relatively technology-independent, but recent changes in regulations concerning seismic requirements may necessitate beginning of a revision effort in the next year.

C37.82 (qualification of switchgear for class 1E service in nuclear power stations)

This document describes methods by which metal-enclosed power switchgear can be qualified for class 1E applications in nuclear power stations.  The document is relatively technology-independent, so that the document remains relevant even though it was initially approved many years ago.  It is expected that revision effort may be necessary in the next several years.

C37.121 (unit substations)

This document describes the broad range of configurations for unit substations.  A unit substation is a substation consisting primarily of one or more transformers that are mechanically and electrically connected to, and coordinated in design with, incoming and outgoing equipment.  The document is technology-independent, so it remains relevant even though it was initially approved many years ago.  It is expected that revision effort may be necessary in the next several years only due to the need to reformat the document to present IEEE-SA requirements.  The document was reaffirmed by IEEE-SA in 2006.
