Current Switchgear Assemblies Subcommittee Activities:

C37.20.1 (LV metal-enclosed switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse (for revision project)

Reaffirmed Sept 2007.  Working group will be formed in the next several years for revision of C37.20.1 to incorporate the content of amendments 1 and 2, and to consider other desirable revisions.  A task force reviewed low-voltage dc traction power switchgear (3200Vdc and below), and determined that a separate standard for this class of equipment is needed (C37.20.8 designation reserved).

C37.20.1a Amendment 1 working group (LV metal-enclosed switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse

This amendment will be incorporated into C37.20.1.  A revision effort is expected to start in the next several years.

C37.20.1b Amendment 2 working group (LV metal-enclosed switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse

A PAR was approved 9/2009 and a working group is being formed to for a new standard C37.20.8 covering LV dc traction switchgear.  This amendment will be incorporated into the new Standard.

C37.20.2 working group (MV metal-clad switchgear)

Chair: M. Wactor

The working group for revision of the 1999 document began work in 05-2006.  The revisions will include reorganization to coordinate with C37.100.1-2007 (Common Clauses for Power Switchgear).  This will allow elimination of large portions of text for common subjects (e.g. procedures for continuous current tests) from the metal-clad switchgear document, simplifying future maintenance.

C37.20.3 / C37.20.4 / C37.22 (MV load interrupter switchgear and switches)

Chair:  C. Ball

These three documents are related, with C37.20.3 covering metal-enclosed load interrupter switchgear, C37.20.4 covering the switch used in C37.20.3 switchgear, and C37.22 listing the preferred ratings of the C37.20.4 switches.  The working groups for revision of these documents began work 05-2007.  The revisions will include reorganization to coordinate with C37.100.1-2007 (Common Clauses for Power Switchgear), and this activity is making very rapid progress.  The revision effort will also coordinate with changes in IEEE 1247-2005 (Interrupter Switches for Alternating Current, Rated Above 1000 Volts).  As part of the revision effort, the content of C37.22 will be merged into C37.20.4.

C37.20.6 working group (MV ground & test devices)

This document was approved by the IEEE-SA 12-2007 and by ANSI 05-2008.  This working group has been disbanded.

C37.20.7 working group (arc resistant LV and MV switchgear)

Chair: M. Wactor

This document was approved by the IEEE-SA 09-2007 and by ANSI 03-2008.  A PAR has been approved 9/2008 for developing Corrigendum 1.  The Corrigendum is to resolve issues with low voltage arcing tests.

C37.20.8 working group (LV dc traction switchgear)

Chair: T. A. Burse, Co-Chair: D. Groves

LV dc traction switchgear has been covered in C37.20.1 for many years, but a task force determined that LV dc traction switchgear should be moved to a separate document.  A PAR was approved 9/2008.  The working group is being formed now and the first meeting should be held in the fall of 2009.  This new standard will be cosponsored by the Vehicular Technology Society.  In coordination with this activity, the Low Voltage Switchgear Devices subcommittee is initiating revision of C37.14 (Low Voltage DC circuit breakers) and may separate LV dc traction circuit breakers into a different standard.

C37.21 (control switchboards)

This Standard covers ratings, construction and testing of dead-front control switchboards.  No current activity.  It is expected that reaffirmation will occur in 2010, with a revision effort starting sometime after 2010.

C37.23 (metal-enclosed bus)

This Standard was reaffirmed by the IEEE-SA 06-2008 and by ANSI 09-2008.  A task force was formed fall of 2008 to address adding cable back into the document, coordinate with C37.100.1 – 2007 (Common Clauses for Power Switchgear) and other issues.

C37.24 (solar radiation on outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear)

This Guide is intended to assist in evaluating the effect of solar radiation on outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear and is applicable to outdoor metal-enclosed power switchgear, control switchboards, and metal-enclosed bus.  No current activity.

C37.59 working group (conversions of power switchgear)

Chair: P. Dwyer

This Standard provides direction and guidance in converting power switchgear equipment from a qualified design.  The document is sponsored by ADSCOM, with joint participation by the Switchgear Assemblies, Low Voltage Switchgear Devices, and High Voltage Circuit Breakers subcommittees.  No current activity.

C37.81 (seismic qualification of class 1E switchgear)

This Guide describes methods by which metal-enclosed power switchgear can be qualified seismically, for use in nuclear power stations.  It is also useful for qualification of switchgear for applications other than in nuclear power stations.  The document is relatively technology-independent, but recent changes in regulations concerning seismic requirements may necessitate beginning of a revision effort in the next several years.

C37.82 (qualification of switchgear for class 1E service in nuclear power stations)

This Standard describes methods by which metal-enclosed power switchgear can be qualified for class 1E applications in nuclear power stations.  The document is relatively technology-independent, so that the document remains relevant even though it was initially approved many years ago.  It is expected that a revision effort may be necessary in the next several years.

C37.121 (unit substations)

Chair: J. Smith

This Standard describes the broad range of configurations for unit substations.  A unit substation is a substation consisting primarily of one or more transformers that are mechanically and electrically connected to, and coordinated in design with, incoming and outgoing equipment.  A work group has been formed to revise this Standard.
