The current approach of the Standards Committee is NOT to launch any
of their own standards efforts, but to, instead, stay abreast of
VTS-Related standards activities in other organizations. Such
activities tend to fall into the following general categories:
In 1996, the VTS launched an ambitious standards effort funded, in part, by
the FTA and supported enthusiastically by the rail industry. The Rail
Transit Vehicle Interface Standards under development are:
P1473 - Communications Protocol Aboard Trains
P1474 - Communications Based Train Control
P1483 - Safety for Software
P1475 - Propulsion, Brake & Train Control
P1476 - Auxiliary Power Systems
P1477 - Passenger Information Systems
P1478 - Environmental Conditions for Electronics
VTS also supports efforts for IEEE 11, Electric Traction Motors.
SCC-32 is a Standards Coordinating Committee for ITS that operates
under the auspices of the IEEE Standards Association. VTS continues
to support SCC-32 until sponsorship can be transferred to the IEEE's
ITS multi-society committee. The Rail Vehicle Interface Standards
are coordinated with this too. Robert M. Barrett is now the VT
interface for this effort.
The IEEE Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards Committee is presently
developing eight rail standards.
