DCMP Newsletter: Search for More Practical, User-Friendly Superconductors

August 8, 2009 (HP23).  The Division of Condensed Matter Physics (DCMP) of the American Physical Society (APS) publishes the DCMP Newsletter.  The summer issue of this Newsletter includes the text of a presentation by Dr. Harold Weinstock under the title “Search for More Practical, User-Friendly Superconductors”.

Harold, a distinguished member of the superconductivity community, is the AFOSR (US Air Force Office of Scientific Research) Program Manager for Superconductivity.  In his presentation he announced the funding and organization of five interacting five-year projects devoted to the search for “new more user-friendly superconductors”, having either critical temperature significantly higher than that of the cuprates, or being less anisotropic and much easier to process by conventional metallurgical methods.

The full text of the presentation, which should interest many of our readers, can be found at: http://dcmp.bc.edu/page.php?name=newsletter09#funding.
