CALL FOR PAPERS

IEEE Sensors Journal

Special issue on

Electronic Nose Technologies

The fields of artificial taste and olfaction have undergone a steady growth over the last decade. Electronic devices that mimic mammalian sensory systems have been investigated at a number of research institutions and commercial organizations around the world.  Many new developments motivated by commercial applications have taken place during this period. Examples of such developments include new sensor technologies, novel sampling handling methods, advanced signal processing algorithms, and hand-held field instruments. These new technologies have found wide application in environmental monitoring, medical diagnosis, process control, food and beverage quality, perfume and fragrance characterization, automotive testing, and chemical hazard detection. Future developments will include bioelectronic devices functioning at the molecular level.  The IEEE Sensors Journal is seeking original contributions in this important developing technology area.

Original research, as well as tutorial and review papers, are solicited for a special issue of the IEEE Sensors Journal in the general area of artificial taste and smell.  The following specific topics are sought:

·            Fundamentals of odor sensing

·            Methods for mimicking mammalian taste functions

·            Sample handling and concentration mechanisms

·            Metal-oxide gas sensing arrays

·            Conducting polymer gas sensing arrays

·            Piezoelectric gas sensing arrays

·            Taste sensors

·            Spectral-analysis-based sensors

·            Bioelectronic sensing methods

·            Signal conditioning and preprocessing algorithms

·            Sensor array calibration methods

·            Pattern classification algorithms

·            Sensor selection and array optimization

·            Optical taste and smell systems

·            Chemical plume tracing

·            New applications and case studies

Solicited as well as invited papers will be accepted after standard peer review as is common for the IEEE Sensors Journal.
