IEEE Sensors Journal

Special issue on Biosensors

Biosensors, studied since the 1960’s, will have an increasingly important role in the 21st century biotechnology and medical revolution. Modern biosensors developed with advanced microfabrication and signal processing techniques are becoming inexpensive, accurate, and reliable.  Increasing miniaturization of biosensors has led to the realization of complex analytical systems such as DNA micro-arrays and chemical/biological laboratories-on-a-chip. This rapid progress in miniature devices and instrumentation development will significantly impact the practice of medical care as well as future advances in national defense and the chemical, environmental and pharmaceutical industries, particularly in genomics and proteomics. The purpose of this special issue is to bring together original research papers representing the best in the general area of biosensors, showing the state of the art as well as the breadth and depth of current research, and thus providing active researchers with a Journal issue of archival value.

Representative topics on which submissions are sought are as follows:

·      Bioelectronic and biochemical sensing methods

·      BioMEMS and biophysical sensing systems

·      Acoustic-wave biosensors

·      Optical and spectral-analysis-based biosensors

·      Micro- and nanoscale biosensors

·      Biosensor manufacturing techniques, packaging, and biocompatibility

·      Advanced biosensor signal processing

·      Biosensor array systems

·      Sample handling and microfluidic systems for biosensing

·      Innovative new biosensing applications and case studies

For manuscript preparation, follow the Information for Authors guidelines at the IEEE Sensors Journal website, http://www.ieee.org/sensors.

All manuscripts must be submitted on-line, via the IEEE Manuscript CentralTM, see http://sensors-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com and http://www.ewh.ieee.org/tc/sensors/manuscript_central.htm. Upon submission, please indicate in Author Comments in Manuscript CentralTM, and also by e-mail to Ms. Jo-Ellen Snyder, j.e.snyder@ieee.org, that the submitted paper is intended for this Special Issue.

All submissions will undergo the standard peer review process of the IEEE Sensors Journal.

Deadlines:  Manuscript Submission deadline is extended to May 15, 2002.  Notification of Acceptance: August 1, 2002.

Final Manuscript due: November 1, 2002. Tentative publication date: March 2003.
