Special issue on

Integrated Multisensor Systems and Signal Processing

Advances in microfabrication and semiconductor technology have enabled the integration of large numbers of sensors with signal processing electronics on the same substrate.  This offers tremendous opportunities to extend the functionality of a single sensor by incorporating spatial information gained from an array of these sensors, e.g., to localize and separate multiple signal sources impinging on the array.  Integrating the signal processing with the sensing can have substantial advantages especially when the number of sensors becomes very large, e.g., photosensors on an imager for motion sensing.  At the same time, dense integration of sensors and their combined bandwidth pose unique design challenges.  Effects of noise and mismatch in miniature sensor arrays, aggravated by their shrinking dimensions, must be addressed as well.

This special issue of the IEEE Sensors Journal calls for original research contributions at the interface between multisensor arrays and signal processing.  Some applications include:

·      Super-resolution direction finding in sensor arrays

·      Blind source separation

·      Active noise control

·      Gradient sensors

·      Directional microphones

·      Active sonar directional range finders

·      Integrated computational sensors

·      Focal-plane motion sensors

·      Infra-red focal-plane arrays

·      Optical wavefront sensors and actuators

·      Integrated spectrometry

·      Optical coherence tomography

·      Biosensors and micro-fluidics arrays

·      DNA micro-arrays

Papers that provide experimental results to validate original contributions are strongly encouraged.

Submitted papers are subject to standard peer review as is common at the IEEE Sensors Journal.

All manuscripts must be submitted on-line, via the IEEE Manuscript CentralTM, see http://sensors-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com and http://www.ewh.ieee.org/tc/sensors/manuscript_central.htm. Upon submission, please indicate in Author Comments in Manuscript CentralTM, and also by e-mail to Ms. Jo-Ellen Snyder, j.e.snyder@ieee.org, that the submitted paper is intended for this Special Issue. For manuscript preparation and submission, please follow the guidelines in the Information for Authors at the IEEE Sensors Journal website, http://www.ieee.org/sensors.
