IEEE Sensors Journal
Guide For Reviewers

Updated December 2007

Thank you for agreeing to review manuscripts for the IEEE Sensors Journal. Per your agreement with the Associate Editor, you should complete the review within three weeks. You must complete your review online using the features of Manuscript Central. Reminders of deadlines will be sent automatically from Manuscript Central. If we do not receive a response after the deadline passes, the Associate Editor or the Sensors Journal Publications Office staff may also contact you.

Any questions you may have about a specific manuscript or the review process should be directed to the Associate Editor. Please refer to the Manuscript Number in all correspondence or phone contacts with the Associate Editor or the Sensors Journal's Publications Office.  IEEE Sensors Journal publishes both sensors letters and sensors papers in the same volume.

Sensors Letters:

Sensors letters are limited to two journal pages, and are meant to enable researchers and industrial practitioners to report original, cutting-edge developments quickly to their colleagues in the sensor community.  The review cycle for letters has been shortened to two weeks, and accepted sensors letters jump to the front of the journal’s electronic and print publishing queues.  Sensors letters are accepted or rejected as submitted.  Authors of rejected sensors letters manuscripts may reuse or re-submit a manuscript that will be treated as a new submission that will have to go through the entire review process again.

The review process is simple and straight forward, since the sensors letters manuscripts must be either accepted for publication in IEEE Sensors Journal or rejected.

Manuscripts appropriate for publication must possess certain key feature such as length, format, novelty, timeliness, and that constitute a significant advancement in the field of sensor technology.  In format, the manuscript must conform to the specific instructions delineated in http://www.ieee.org/sensors/sj, including a two-printed-page limit.

IEEE sensors letters manuscripts must also command a high level of reader interest to warrant rapid publication.  Further, the manuscript must not have been published elsewhere and has not been simultaneously submitted to another technical journal for publication.

Reviewers need to consider whether or not the manuscript satisfies the five publication principles delineated in Section VIII of the preparation of letters article published in IEEE Sensors Journal, February 2006.

Sensors Papers:
The submission length should be 30 double-spaced pages or less, including figures and author biographies. Remember that manuscripts should not grow appreciably as they are revised, and when appropriate probably should contract a bit. Authors should not state the obvious in their papers, but only refer to established science by providing a reference. The desirable published-manuscript length is 8 single-spaced, double-column pages, so please help the author identify, through your review, how the paper can be improved to save space while still making full scientific disclosure.

The review categories are self-explanatory. However, two criteria are NECESSARY for a recommendation of acceptance for publication: NOVELTY (new science or a new approach to established science) and APPROPRIATENESS (the manuscript is complete in and of itself, and is a good "fit" with the Sensors Journal).

Please score the manuscript according to the following codes:

A = Manuscript is ready for publication as is.

AQ = Manuscript is almost ready for publication; the author should be required to make some small amendments as noted in Section III of the review form. The amended manuscript will not be returned to the reviewers.

RQ = Manuscript requires some major changes by the author, and must be returned to the reviewers for a second review round.

R1 = Reject (Paper is not of sufficient quality or novelty to be published in this Journal).

R2 = Reject (A major rewrite is required. Author should be encouraged to resubmit rewritten paper at some later time.)

R3 = Reject (Paper is seriously flawed; do not encourage resubmission.)

For a score of R2, please provide detailed comments in Section II of the online review form that will guide the effort of the author(s) in amending the manuscript and preparing it for publication; or in the event of a score of R1 or R3, that will help the author(s) understand why the manuscript is considered unworthy for publication at this time.

Reviews of manuscripts submitted to the transactions are "blind" reviews, and the identity of every reviewer is carefully protected. In a confidential portion of the online review form, you can suggest additional reviewers for the manuscript, or record private remarks to the Associate Editor about the manuscript. If the manuscript is award-quality, please complete the appropriate section. Finally, please keep your Manuscript Central reviewer profile information current, in the event the Associate Editor recommends a second round of reviews. You can update your profile from your “Reviewer Center” screen in Manuscript Central.

The Sensors Journal appreciates your willingness to act as a reviewer and will do everything possible so that you are not overwhelmed with review requests. Our goal is to allow you to complete one review before requesting your further participation.

Once again, thank you for serving as a reviewer for the Sensors Journal. Your participation adds great value to the peer review process.
