IEEE IEEE Young Professional Affinity Group was created in 1996 as a membership program to help students transition to young professionals within the larger IEEE community. IEEE young professionals are automatically added to the Young Professional member community as they graduate. IEEE Young Professional is a vibrant community of engineers, scientists, and technical experts with member representation across the globe and throughout IEEE societies.

Following the successful implementation of a SIGHT pilot project and SIGHT activities in Kolkata and Guwahati during December 2015, supported by the AP-S SIGHT committee, it has been decided to form a SIGHT chapter under IEEE Kolkata Section. The Chapter would comprise a committee to chart a comprehensive roadmap for implementation of SIGHT projects and SIGHT vision under the Section. Different ventures ranging from Telemedicine to Smart Villages to application of Internet of things, to rural electrification, to Amateur Radio Training and imparting e-education to the underprivileged people in the regions will be focused by this group.

Focus area of the group

  1. Inspire students and practitioners to make a difference in solving problems including the food crisis, the water crisis, the communications / information access crisis and power / lighting/health care systems
  2. Educate locals on SIGHT programs and its usefulness
  3. Applications Focus: Healthcare Monitoring, Hazards Monitoring and Alert, Rural Electrification, Environmental Monitoring, etc.
  4. Encourage students to join IEEE membership and leverage local support for collaboration, and networking, interactions with local university, institutes, and government agencies to deliver technical talks on IEEE SIGHT.
